Gero von Boehm • Germany • 2020 • The life and legacy of a controversial photography genius.
One of the great masters of photography, Helmut Newton made a name for himself exploring the female form. Born to a Jewish family in Berlin, Newton lived as a teenager under the Nazis before fleeing Germany in 1938. In his commissions for Vogue and other magazines, Newton’s photographs have been accused of fetishism and misogyny, most notably by Susan Sontag—yet they persist in the public imagination as some of the most iconic images of the twentieth century.
Featuring candid interviews with Grace Jones, Charlotte Rampling, Isabella Rossellini, Anna Wintour, and Claudia Schiffer, Helmut Newton: The Bad and the Beautiful digs into the life and legacy of a controversial genius. Gero von Boehm’s documentary premiered at Tribeca, Stockholm, and Reykjavik.
